I wanted to share my experience on refreshing my a/c system and converting from R12 to R134a on my 220k mile LS400. My decision to DIY was driven by the nearly $700 the local Lexus dealer charged to "repair" my a/c last year, only to give up when they could not get it to work for longer than a day..

These systems use compression flare fittings at all the joints so there are no O rings to replace. Now in 1967 Ford installed the evaporator in an integrated heat/air assembly in the dash.When an R-12 system is retrofitted to 134a, the general rule of thumb is that the refrigerant capacity/charge should be reduced to 80-90 % of the original capacity. The original GM spec for these trucks was 56 ounces of R-12. So, if we take 56 ounces of R-12 and multiply it by .85, we get a 134a charge of 48 ounces. But, to answer your question:Found the conversion kit with the fittings and the neutralizer oil for $20 and cans of 134a for $5. R12 is still on the shelf but you need the cert to buy and they cost $35. So for the cost of the kit and the 134a is the cost of 1 can of r12.
